so many cases of broken squares, or should I say broken into but reformed. |

There are few instances of squares being broken and the units forming them defeated. Off the top of my head only Dresden and Garcia Hernandez come to mind. It was a very rare occurrence and much was made of it if it happened so if a report at a particular battle is hard to come by, that should not be surprising. As Bgbboogie said, there are a few cases of squares being broken into, but not breaking. The Black Watch at Quatre Bras comes to mind. |

"The Black Watch at Quatre Bras comes to mind." Except, the problem the 42nd had at QB was different, in that, having been caught in line by French lancers that, coming from right rear, had been mistaken for allied cavalry, the square didn't have time to form before the lancers rolled up the grenadiers running in from the flank. A number managed to enter the open rear face which then closed on them. It would seem none made it back out. |

There were instances in the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-1849, which was fought using essentially Napoleonic weapons and tactics. E.g., on the first day of the battle of Kápolna. Dodendorf, 5 May 1809. Single squadrons of the Prussian 2. Brandenburgisches Husaren-Regiment managed to break two or three company squares of the Westphalian 1. Linien-Regiment, but were repulsed by a company of grenadiers of the French 22e de ligne. |

"list:" Lengthy but perhaps not the most authoritative. "In 1815 at Quatre Bras, 2 British squares were broken by the French lancers. Peter Hofschroer writes, "… squares of British infantry held off the French cavalry at first, but the square of the 42nd was broken and the 44th was thrown into disorder, the colour of the 44th being fought over."" Well, no. 42nd as above. The 44th, caught from behind had no time to form square and had to meet the lancers in line. The rear rank were ordered to face about and give fire. The line held. link (Peter Hofschroer….) |
