"Civil War food came in many shapes and sizes. Suppose you're a Civil War soldier and you've marched all day in the grueling heat. You're exhausted, but you have one more duty before you can retire to your tent to dream of better days; you have to cook your dinner…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

This is sort of a "Civil War food was SO YUCKY" article. Anyone with a real interest should pick up "A Taste for War" by William Davis. |

John- Nothing in the article seems inaccurate. Indeed, I would consider such a diet "yucky", and my reading indicates that Civil War soldiers would agree. Does the book you suggest indicate that Civil War rations were scrumptious? |

Does the book you suggest indicate that Civil War rations were scrumptious? By no means. However, the article dwells on things like salt beef being fur and entrails while ignoring the heroic efforts of both sides' quartermasters to provide fresh meat and veggies. And fresh baked bread whenever the forces were holding still (or besieging someplace). This is an interesting topic, but the article is a bit one sided. |

I once accessed some songs about 'Gruber Beans / Peas'. Cannot now find, but worth the search! |

another good food song. My reenacting unit broke into this one at a few events. Hard crackers come again no more. YouTube link YouTube link |
