Well the game may be ok, but the History of this is wrong. Trimble only commanded Lowrance and Lane's brigades (from Pender's Division) and they where deployed behind Pettigrews 4 brigades in a second wave. Armistead's brigade was also deployed behind the other 2 brigades of Pickett's division as a second wave also. This game has all 9 brigades in a single line And where are Wilcox and Lang's brigades (Anderson's division)? They were part of "Pickett's Charge" and they are not even depicted in the game? 11 brigades made the attack, not 9. Last, seems there is a lot more then just a game "revision" as the confederate counters depict units carrying state flags instead of the Army Battle flags. Kim |

"carrying state flags instead of the Army Battle flags" Maybe that was done to make the game more palatable with today's anti-Confederate rantings. But it is definitely not historical! Jim |

Yes, "the history of this is wrong". Wilcox and Lang were rather 'late to arrive at the party' but they should certainly be included. Since the link included a number of reviews from boardgamegeek I went to that site to have a look for myself. The game is rated quite highly (7.4/10) and all but two ratings were 5/10 or higher. Comments on BGG are overwhelmingly positive and include: "I am not a history buff, and therefore I am not knowledgeable on the details of this particular battle beyond its very basics, but I leave my first session of the game feeling like I know it." [I suspect otherwise.]; and "Is it a bona fide war game as purists in the hobby might judge? Is it a worthwhile gaming experience in terms of both fun and simulation? Is there anything that it can teach? In my opinion, the answer is yes on all three counts." [I think the correct answer is 'no'. It's not a wargame, it may be a fun game but it is not a simulation, and I can not see that it would teach anything approaching the truth.] I did not read everything on BGG about this game but generally it appeared that the claim made by the game ("In Magnificent Style is a solitaire game depicting the final desperate Confederate attack on July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. You command the Confederate brigades that made Pickett's Charge") is simply accepted: historical omissions and falsities do not even seem to rate a mention. It appears from this game and other events that the 'war on history' is over (recently discussed on the TMP thread 'ACW Battlefields: Next Target In The War On History'). Although there may be further skirmishes, history was not the winner. |

I was tempted to back this originally because I really enjoy solo games, and I am a big fan of the ACW. Loved the art style of this as well. But this was one of my pet projects as a teen (decades ago) and when I saw they had the wrong brigade lineup, and skipped other brigades, I decided it was a hard pass. As was mentioned, 11 brigades made the charge, not 9, and only 6 of the ones included were in line (should be 8 if they included the missing brigades), with 3 behind them. |
