In view of building a diorama of Pickett's Charge, I'm trying to assess the "types" of Confederate uniforms which may have been worn by:

Virginia Regiments

Tennessee Regiments

Alabama Regiments

Maybe the information is not available, or maybe there was very little difference. But I understand that Confederate infantry could be seen wearing Frock Coats, Sack Coats, or Shell Jackets.

Many thanks.

The Troiani pictures area great resource on this matter.

I'll second Martin's suggestion.

At that point in time you could use just about anything uniform wise. My reading suggest that a ragged rebel look was in vogue.

You do have a lot of leeway but frock coats would be unlikely – shell jackets were becoming fairly common by 1863

By the summer of 1863 the Confederate Quartermaster Department was providing the bulk of the uniforms issued to the Army of Northern Virginia and the poorly uniformed "ragged Reb" had largely become a thing of the past. The ANV was thus primarily supplied with clothing produced by the Richmond Depot although other depot produced uniforms did turn up as well. It should be noted that North Carolina regiments were instead often issued with uniforms produced by the state of North Carolina.

For the most part then, ANV troops would be wearing shell jackets, although I have seen it mentioned that much of Benning's Brigade had been supplied with simple frock coats (perhaps from the Richmond Clothing Manufactory) just prior to the Gettysburg campaign.

As was mentioned above, check out the paintings done by Don Troiani;

The uniform jackets manufactured by the Richmond Depot were first examined by Les Jensen back in 1989. His seminal work is available on the MC&H website:

An excellent more recent follow-up to Jensen's study can be found here:

Best approach then would be shell jackets with variations in cloth colour for both jackets and trousers.

A look at Troiani's Gettysburg paintings shows that his Confederates are in gray, not butternut, and are quite uniform in appearance.
