The mountains of Albania in November (one of the coldest winters on record in Europe) with not an overcoat or glove between them? Great modelling of Evezones in their battle gear (for a Greek Summer) however. Good find as always. Armies always dress their soldiers for a cold winter. Just think of 1941 outside Moscow or 1982 outside Port Stanley…..? |

I made a trade years ago with a prominent man from Greece. He traded me some books in exchange for packs of Old Glory 15s which I had in stock. I got six really nice books on Greek history. One was an entire book on the Evones. Another was on the Italy-Greek War of 1940 by the Greek High Command. |

easy to paint because you just use olive drab right out of the bottle for the skin tone… |

Olive drab? Do your Greeks have chronic renal failure or haemochromatosis? Even thalassemia (which they are genetically prone to) would not do that. In the mountains of Albania, in a winter campaign, I would go for the palest flesh colours and then highlight with white! But I always thought they were Evezones in that daft frilly skirt and the goose step. I thought I was being so clever in changing the topic title from Evzones. But it is like so many things I simply "knew". Wrong! |

The problem is, my ability to make witty remarks is worse than Hackman's accent in A Bridge Too Far. |

My comments are based on a book by Yanis Mylonas published by J Floros titled The Evones. A nice thick 320 page coffee table book. Even in the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 the Evones are shown in both white with yellow vests atvDeskati and mid-blue coats at Aetorachi. A recruiting poster from the war has a soldier in olive green outfit. A painting titled Aera from the war shows Evones in olive drab coats and trousers. In most khaki tunic photos and paintings, the pants and leggings are white. The officers in the painting are wearing olive drab A of the style worn by the troops. In all photos from the Asia Minor campaign of the 1920s, the troops are wearing dark olive drab?, colored coats and pants. A recruiting poster from the outbreak of the 1940 Italio-Greek War olive drab trousers, leggings, tunic and black tasseled cap. A winter dress is shown as khaki, olive drab, long tunics, trousers and leggings. Collar is red. A battle dress uniform for 1940 is similar but he is wearing a British style helmet and has yellow rank stripes on his right sleeve right below the elbow. Another museum plate shows a soldier wearing a black sheepskin cape with a Greek helmet. In battle dress in 1940, they tended to remove the tassel from the floppy fez. In all Balkan to 1940 representations the soldiers are wearing infantry boots with black round pompous on the toe. |
