During a game do you ever have attacks where the which are much more effective than you could have imagined?

Purely a coincidence I assure you. Nothing a little Gorilla glue won't fix.

We had a Jaguar pilot in a game of Cold War Commander who flew through hell to deliver a cluster bomb strike. He was fired at by AAA, shoulder mounted SAMs, point defence AA MG's and even a couple of SA-13 and, I think, a SA-6 battery. He dodged and evaded maybe a dozens attack rolls before delivering the cluster bomb strike. In CWC you can't target HQ stands directly, you can only destroy them through indirect fire or over-run in close assault. There were perhaps 6 units in the cluster bomb beaten zone and none of them were hit – except for my battlegroup commander. Hit, failed for maximum effect and all saves failed. The guy flew through hell and hit the rear area and took out the enemy command. He earned his tea and biscuits that day. |

Definitely not that effective. I suspect a lot of Cold War era fighter-bomber pilots could be, even without the need for "suicide bombing" (though some pilots flying these low level ops and dropping nukes might beg to differ about their chances of survival, even from the blast of their own weapons) given the high number of nukes they were to carry and use, if/when needed should the war actually turned "Hot". Many/most US and NATO post-WWII Fighters/Fighter Bombers from the day were capable of carrying them, e.g. A-4s, A-5s, A-6s, A-7s, F-4s, F-84s, F-100s, F-104s, F-105s, F-111s, Seahawks, Hunters (I think), Buccaneers, Mirages, etc., etc.. Pretty much any aircraft, other than cargo planes and aerial refuelers could and did train to carry nukes. PDF link Many of the bombs were dial a detonation, so the yield could be adjusted to fit the required needs of the target(s). In the PDF, it mentions a lot were set for 1 KT, since they could be used with less worry of long-term problems, and our forces could just maneuver around their ground zeroes on the battlefield. |

Based on Cold War actual experience, maybe they should have picked Cessnas delivery vehicles. link |
