Looks like an M1 Carbine to me….very popular weapon with NLF, especially women. Light weight, low recoil etc. I think they came by them from the ARVN though I suspect some were supplied to the Viet Minh when they were fighting the Japanese. Maybe some were sent to Chinese forces and then made their way into the hands of the Vietnamese.

..they were useda good deal and the defacto weapon of
choice for many of the lighter built VC

Yes, the VC used M1s and in many cases anything they could get. In many cases, especially early in the War.

Yes, in the early photos they used weapons leftover from the French, US weapons given to the French, as well as from Russian and China. Have seen MAT-49s, PPSs, PPSHs, etc., etc.
