I am, admittedly, more familiar with triremes and their ways of fighting than with Roman warships, but I thought the purpose of rams was to stave in the sides of enemy warships, not "The underwater battering rams, designed to break down harbor defenses." I can see equipping a few ships to attack harbor defenses, maybe, but this account makes it sound as most, if not all, ships were given rams to attack the harbor defenses. Grelber |
