a definition of what is a "Manoeuvre de principe" … or when a great body of troops is acting as a single body of troops .. "ART. II. DES MANŒUVRES DE PRINCIPES.
On appelle manœuvres de principes, celles par lesquelles on fait mouvoir une troupe seule, comme un bataillon, & dont l'application s'étend ensuite à plusieurs, de-là toute une armée.
On fait mouvoir une troupe ou dans son entier, ou en la rompant par parties quelconques. Elle se meut dans son entier lorsqu'elle marche de front en avant ou en arrière, ou par un de ses flancs, ou qu'elle fait une conversion, Elle se meut par parties, lorsqu'on la rompt par certaines portions qu'on appelle demi-rang, quart de rang, compagnies & sections. Rompre n'est autre chose que changer la forme & la disposition habituelle d'une troupe, soit pour la mettre en marche, ou changer son front, ou former une évolution, -
