Played in a Black Powder comp at the annual Call to Arms convention in Wellington, New Zealand. I used my 1805-1808(ish) Spanish. I did pretty well and got third place. Don't underestimate the Spanish. My advice to anyone playing Spanish is to take lots of guerrillas and don't expect to win – but be pleasantly surprised when you pull a win out of the bag.

We had a guy that came by the shop to play sometimes, called Spanish Bob.(we had a lot of Bobs in our group.) He generally won and was not against sometimes getting confused and firing on British troops with his artillery. Always in a tactically bad position, his Spanish troops would usually carry the day with unbelievable die rolls. With his luck, I guess that he found his way to a casino and quit coming around.

I wish I had dice luck like that. Mine was 50/50 at best this weekend. If a few more dice fell in my favour I think I would have done better. But we all say that, don't we?

why not field a Romana Spanish army? By all accounts he was the best of their generals and took the best of the Spanish army with him…
