So I'm close to finishing my second army Sumerians, (well lets call it stage on completion because are they ever completed are they?) and have Lullubi's figures ready to follow and am ready to order Elamites.
But what to get for them apart from a ton of archers and some battle carts/straddle carts. Does anyone else have any opinions on what other formations they may have used? Mixed using pavise?

what figures are you using and what rules?
The lists for the rules will give you an indication as to what troop types are used and of course then figures.

Thanks Battle Master. Yes I'm looking through different rules army lists for clues. Thought I'd check to see if someone had seen a pic or list I havn't.

"Armies of the Ancient Near East" by Stillman and Tallis provides a bit of information. A cavalryman is illustrated armed with bow and spear but unshielded. A bit of Assyrian text apparently mentions troops armed with bow and shield and "heavily- armed archers", although these are not illustrated.

"Army Lists Vol. I, Armies of the Ancient Near East 3000BC- 500BC" by Hutchby and Clark (for WRG) list a small number of cavalry and Carts and a small number of multi- armed, shielded archers. The bulk of the army is listed as LI or LMI unshielded archers with, perhaps, up to 1/3 as LI or LMI with light spear or javelin, some of whom may have shields. This for armies prior to 850BC.

Thank you Khanscom! How I wish I'd bought that Stillman and Tallis book back in the day! That sounds like the model I'm going with.

If you are looking at opponents for the Sumerians, then the Elamites would be the 'Early Elamites' and not the Neo-Elamites as referred to by Khanscom which are about 1,500 years later. Therefore, no cavalry.
I would suggest some shielded spearmen as with the Sumerians in addition to the archers
Look at lists such as with DBM and FOG for details

The DBMM list for the 3rd millennium has hordes of indifferent archers, a few better ones, a few spearmen with or without large shields, a few axemen, a few battle-carts, and a very few scouts riding donkeys.

(If you're the one person in the world who makes 2nd millennium Sumerians the contemporary Elamites are largely unchanged – but if you did you'd presumably not have Lullubi as enemies.)

Hi Battle Master.
Ah yes no cavalry. I will even be resisting getting those awesome looking platform cars with their Hi Tech glitzy spoked wheels.
Hi Last Conformist,
The Lullubi were going to be my original Zagros Mountains Tribal annoyances. But you sound like you might know more about them. Starting my campaign in 2,500 BC.

Thanks Gisbygeo! What a fantastic book.

I don't know much about the Lullubi, really, but their claim to fame, such as it is, is as enemies of the Akkadians and Sumerians in the later 3rd millennium BC, so I took them as an indication that's the period you're doing.

As far as I remember, every Sumerian wargames army I've seen has been Early Dynastic (ca 2900-2350 BC), revolting against the Akkadians (ca 2350-2100 BC), or Third Dynasty of Ur (ca 2100-2000 BC); nobody seems to make the succeeding Isin-Larsa period (ca 2000-1750 BC).

In 28mm Cutting Edge Miniatures through Warlord Games make them for the whole period of the Bronze Age c.3000 – 1000 BCE
