You were asked to decide – TMP link

One of our readers says that The Sword and The Flame plays best with one or two platoons per player. Do you agree?

Yes, I think that is what Larry intended. The best games I've played have been with one Imperial unit versus two Native units.

Exactly, but do remember 'per player'.

Gamers with far more figures than sense…
I routinely give them around 5 units.

I use 3 or 4 for the civilized player, more for native forces.

I play Sword Flame, Machineguns n hand Grenades in the Aussie bush with 6 individual Recon Marines vs 8 individual; VDV Communist Paratroopers. Alll works out good n fine… Lots of death dealing, bleeding and heroic actions

One or two colonial platoons (call them companies if you wish) and two or three times that for natives. Alternatively, use half the number of figures for one unit and that way the game still flows with twice the number of units!

That 'two platoons per player' always meant 20 figure
Imperial units.

Using half or 8-figure units (which I've never done)
I'd increase the number of units/player for the Imperials.

I've always thought that controlling 2 units was strange. I can see controlling one unit. You're the Lieutenant. But 2?
The maximum number of units a commander can handle is around 5, at whatever level.
Ten is just bizarre. Play a board game!

Besides, the whole purpose of controlling 5 units is to have a bunch of toys on the table. grin
