Since I am in involuntary quarantine and have a lot of time to kill, I have begun to voraciously consume books. Just today I finished this little book about the experiences of Frank Wooten, an American that volunteered for service with the Allied forces in Mesopotamia prior to the U.S. entry into the Great War. Wooten ends up in the 14th Battery of the Light Armored Cars, and describes his experiences on patrol and traveling around Iraq and Palestine. Due to the fact that the armored cars could not withstand the rigors of pitched battles, Wooten often finds himself on long recon missions, frequently accompanied by Indian or British cavalry. Wooten describes some combat and the armored cars and tenders, but also his experiences with weather, the desert, various towns that have become all too familiar over the last several years, food, and the various people he meets on his missions. Overall, In the last two chapters Wooten transfers to the AEF, that has recently arrived in France, and serves in the artillery until the Armistice and a little of the occupation of Germany. I enjoyed this book and learned quite a bit about a campaign and service that I'm fairly unfamiliar with.
