I have absolutely enjoyed every moment of painting up this unit. They really are beautifully crafted miniatures and deserved all the TLC they received. The last two ranks are currently drying after glossing and on the advice of meistro Redzed I'm going to be leaving the gloss to go off thoroughly for a few days before matting down. i hope you enjoy the pics half as much as I did painting them up. More pics including close ups and waffling can be found on my blog here: justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2020/08/early-byzantine-front-ranks-with-hand.html

Beautiful banner. Unfortunate positioning of the spear, tho. 😉 |

Unfortunate positioning of the spear, tho. 😉 He can just be traded out with the front rank spear element and presto! |

Why are the "shoulder straps" green? |

Why are the "shoulder straps" green? Because…. this unit is representing dismounted Bucellarii, the very men Belisaruis ordered to dismount to face the Sassanians at Dara- they heave the best harness/kit. Leather was often dyed in many colours hues. Also, for aesthetic reasons and to partly justify the years spent at art college ;>) Quite basic really; red and green complementary colours. What colour would you have painted them? Just Add Water Blog: justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com |
