"May 2, 1808 was the day that the Spanish people, in the capital of the Spanish Empire, decided to rise up in arms against the French invader. That day has become "Independence Day" in most of Spain (in some areas it has received a facelift to be called "War against French"). One of the most significant vicissitudes of that day, and which occupies a special place in the cultural heritage of the people of Madrid, is the defense of the Monteleón (or Las Maravillas) artillery park, directed by Captains Daoíz and Velarde. A handful of soldiers and several hundred civilians became strong in the park and faced suicide against the French imperial army under the command of Marshal Murat…."
