I am about half way through with my re-reading of "Mediaeval Greece" by Nicolas Cheetham and was curious what other sources might be available. Over a couple of centuries you have Franks, Byzantines, Bulgars, Slavs, The Catalan Company, Angevins, Italians, and Turks all interacting. in particular I am curious about the role of the Military Orders in Greece. A reference to the death of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights in a battle in 1320 is particularly intriguing. I have run across one PhD thesis on the matter, 'The Hospitallers, Templars, and Teutonic Knights in the Morea After the Fourth Crusade' which I may try to get through interlibrary loan (not holding my breath though). Any other sources anyone aware of? Thanks in advance. |

Chronicles of the Crusades in Penguin Classics includes two chronicles, one of which covers the 4th Crusade. |

The Latins in the Levant by William Miller This is old, but has a lot of good information. The Chronicle of the Morea You'd have to get this through interlibrary loan--last time I checked it wasn't available for sale new. Mistra by Steven Runciman The Late Byzantine Army: Arms and Society, 1204-1453 by Mark Bartussis Emperor Michael Palaeologus and the West, 1256-1282 According to Miller, each of the three military orders was granted 4 knights fees when the Principality of the Morea was set up. The Teutonic Knights were finally lost theirs to the Byzantines about 1432. Unfortunately, my copy is missing the page about the battle of St. George. It does mention a later commander of the Teutonic Order, who just seems to have been in charge of their four knight's fees. My recollection from reading all these is that, sometime in the 1300s, the primary sources dry up, and the secondary accounts, like Miller and Cheetham, just kind of gloss over the period, until they start getting new primary sources, in the late 1300s. The Catalan Vengeance (Lowe) is a good read, which inspired one of the most enjoyable campaigns I've run – and we completed it! |
