Sorry if this has been covered before, but I was not able to find the question doing a search.

I just picked up Rommel, and while I don't mind square grid games (I play a variety) I am wonder whether Rommel plays better on a hex board. My grid is a bit small (80mm square) for my existing figures so I am hoping that I can use my 4" hex map.

What, if anything, needs to be adapted if hexes are used?

Cheers,
Dave

It works fine on hexes, I play it on Hexon hex terrain. You just need to adjust the positioning of the terrain slightly as the hexes are offset compared to squares.

Thanks!

Martin – do you play with the hex point at top, or hex flat?

Does it make a particular difference? I had originally thought of using flat edge on front (I have Hotz mats with both styles on reverse sides) but I'm open to either.

And thanks, 55th!

It works the same on hexes but you need to clarify outflanking details and passing between two enemy held hexes

The Rommel rules include a section explaining how to convert to a hex grid.

"Martin – do you play with the hex point at top, or hex flat?"

Either works, it depends on the alignment of the underlying terrain. Generally I use a Memoir 44 type arrangement (hex points at the top).
