Does anyone base their pikemen differently for their shot?

DOUGKL29 Jul 2020 3:23 p.m. PST

We base pike 4 figures per stand and shot at 2 or 3 figures per stand. to my knowledge shot were not in as close a formation as pike.

Yes base then differently – Always do pikes in 2 ranks – with the ability to do four and shot – 1 rank deep with ability to do 2

Then size of units can change a bit – say between forces before and after the new model army or changes from various army configurations from Swedes to Spanish

Sorry for the deletion of my first post. I realized I had some of the numbers confused and before I could make the correction I was called for supper. LOL

This is a generalization, but from what I have found is that both pike and shot formed up with about 3 feet frontage per man. The pike had no gaps along their entire front, but the pike would have a 6 foot interval every 4 to 7 men (depending on the "drill book" in use) to allow for countermarching to the rear after the forward rank(s) fired.

Thus: MMMM MMMM PPPPPPPP MMMM MMMM

Depth for both pike and shot in the face of the enemy were 3 feet per man. Ranks were opened up to about 6 feet per man for movement (try marching with a pike with only 3 feet between ranks – all but the front rank will have their heads thoroughly bruised by the pike being carried by the pikemen to their front) but when closer to the foe the ranks would be closed up.

Our 15mm club rules have 4 pike and 3 musketeers on 40mm frontage bases.

JanissaryAga30 Jul 2020 7:46 p.m. PST

my imperialists are 4 per base, 40x40mm for 28mm figures

WKeyser03 Aug 2020 2:22 a.m. PST

I base my 15mm pike men 4 men in two ranks and musketeers 4 men first rank then second rank 3 men. 40mm x 30mm bases.

I just really like the look of lots of figures per base. So when I make pike and shot units for FOG rules or actually any other rules the units look "Beefy"
