Hello,

Upon browsing the forum I have bought: "Empires Collide: The French and Indian War, 1754-63"

but is there a book to recommend that will help with the painting? French / English uniforms and especially the woodland tribes?

thank you

There are a number of Osprey books that could help you.

Not books, but you may want to check Pinterest. For example, if you search for Eugene Leliepvre, you will find beautiful plates of the various French regiments that fought in the FIW.

Galloping Major Games once had a color guide for all the participants, including various Woodland Indians such as the Huron and the 5 Nations, but this is no longer on their website. There is not that much that is definitive about the natives in any case.I do recall that the Iroquois were fond of tattoos, while others preferred war paint. By 1750, most tribes were trading with the European empires so much cloth and multi-colored glass beads were worn, along with widespread use of vermilion for war paint.

Not a book, but well done CD-ROMs.

I would second the recommendation to check out the Osprey books.

Also, Don Troiani has published several books with some content covering the period. They are useful both for great artwork, source content on artifacts (weapons and personal equipment), and inspiration. You could look at

Don Troiani's American Battles

link

or

Don Troiani's Soldiers in America

link

Given their coverage of the same period, I am not sure how much material is duplicated. I have the second one, but have not seen the first one.

There is also an older book by Philip Katcher, Armies of the American Wars 1753-1815. It has 46 pages of material, but no coverage of the tribes. The artwork in the Katcher book is extracted from some of the Ospreys.

What scale and what period/theater of the war? For the British side, uniforms changed significantly from 1755 to 1759. The French side, not so much.

Thank you all, I was looking for French, British and Indians.

Don Troiani's books look nice and were ordered. It will get me started. I could get them for the sampe price as Osprey's so I did not hesitate long :)
