I guess I'm a little skeptical on some these press stories coming out of WWII. They seem designed to lift the spirts of the folks back home. I don't know if Joe's story is totally true or not. I am just aware of the wartime press being involved with making a good story better. For example one of my uncles got his picture in the national newspapers at least twice. He was in a group photo of Marines on some island in the Pacific. He was the ‘wounded' one with his arm in a sling. In reality he broke his arm playing baseball after the battle. In another photo he was a bit grubby getting back on his transport and the subtitle ran was ‘a Marine with 1000 yard stare'.
These particular stories didn't lift the spirts of my grandmother when people across the country sent her clippings. |
