Listening to the exploits of Horatio Hornblower and his 20-gun sloop HMS Hotspur whilst rigging my Spanish squadron, inspired me to get stuck into a little scratch build project I had in mind, namely to construct a similar ship-rigged sloop from the Warlord brig-sloop.
Much fun was had messing about with plasticard and modelling saw to produce the proof of concept model seen below alongside the brig

This is a great thing to do about the Too Many Brigs problem. I have 16 of these little chaps, so I've been converting lots of them into ship-sloops. My goal is to have no two alike, so some are getting quarter decks made from Plastruct siding and stern galleries made from sliced apart frigate stern plates. I also converted a few to merchants, by replacing the deck with Plastruct siding (to remove the guns), carving off the muzzles, and covering the gun ports with port lids. - Ix |

Nice work. I prefer AWI naval gaming, when more three masted sloops were used. As I am less inclined to modify at this point, I use brigs, but upgrade their stats to reflect their better sailing qualities and crew size. Hope to see these ships and 4th rates come from Warlord in the future. |

Very nicely done, and fills a big hole in the range! |

Thanks for your comments chaps. These conversions are relatively simple to do, and I to am thinking about adding a quarterdeck and forecastle on future builds. Quite keen to work on a 64-80 gun conversion with the 74 model to see how effective that might be. Anyway a few third rates of renown to get finished first! Cheers JJ |

I would like to see your 3rd rates of renown. I understand Warlord added metal bits to make some 80s out of 74s. Definitely a limited upgrade, but are they passable for the time being? |

My apologies for the necropost…I have just started building a fleet for Black Sails(USA) and I am especially interested in great lakes encounters so I plan on building a number of sloops of war. I see that Warlord doesn't have a card or points specifics in the rulebook for a ship-rigged sloop of war. Has anyone played a sloop of war and if so what values were used? Cheers! |
