I'm surprised not to see the story of the Roman Empire falling because the barbarians had invented stirrups first.

My medieval history professor hit that story on the first day of class, remarking drily, "history is what you can remember, and we like the story of the stirrup because it's easy to remember." Then he paused before finishing, "just be sure to remember that it's not true."
