Well this is a significant development.

And about time.

It's worrying to have diplomatic channels directly under attack.

During the Cold War the Soviets and Americans actually had decent lines of communication to stop any significant spirals.

This is despite both parties using their embassies and consulates for major spying operations.

It's a case of "we pretend you are not spying and you pretend we don't know about your spying."

Watching it on the news all day.
The Americans expect the forced closure of the WuHan counselete in response.

I am sure American staff will be grateful if they have to relocate out of the Wuhan consulate, given that Wuhan is ground zero for COVID.

"It's worrying to have diplomatic channels directly under attack".

Why?

We still have phones and the internet.

Better to keep your enemies at a distance, rather than let them in to spy, steal, and attack you.

Thresher0122 Jul 2020 9:16 p.m. PST

When will the others be closed?

In which case you might want to reconsider your whole immigration program from China including those 300,000 students in your universities paying mega dollars and some of whom are no doubt spies.

Thresher0123 Jul 2020 2:57 a.m. PST

I'm okay with ALL of them being deported, since I suspect you are right that many/most are, or will be required to be spies by the communist government.

In the age of virtual education, due to social distancing requirements, and school closures, there is no need for them to be her now anyway.

Looks like I'm answering my own question of the additional closures. Apparently, the San Francisco Chinese Consulate is harboring a Chinese national wanted in connection for some investigation into bio-weapons, and/or bio-weapon research.

I just heard that the Chinese have advised that they have no intention of leaving. I'll get the popcorn…

Thresher0123 Jul 2020 9:00 p.m. PST

Intention or not, drag them away, kicking and screaming.

Can't wait for the video footage of that.

I guess if we really want to play nice, and not enter their compound/buildings to do that, then we can have a modern siege.

I suspect they won't last long in Houston's heat and humidity, without A/C and other electrical power, water, food, etc., etc..

I see that Chinese want to close US consulate in Chendou (sp?) which is in south-west of China. Therefore I guess all problems created for their mission in US will be reflected to those in this consulate…

It's a good time for US manufacturers to get out of China.

It's been expected that the Chinese will close an American consulate in reciprocity since the Houston consulate closure was announced. It was just a question of which one. Some thought and hoped it would be the consulate in Wuhan, but it turned out to be Chengdu. Better start burning documents.

Typical diplomatic tit-for-tat, just like the mutual diplomat exchange, I mean expulsions between the UK and Russia a couple of years ago in the wake of the poisoning of double agent Sergei Skirpal and his daughter Yulia.

They won't as long as there's still money to be made. Never let politics get in the way of the bottom line. Just ask the NBA and Hollywood.

No need to drag anyone out; just shut off the water supply and electricity. After a few days they will be gone on their own.

Thresher0124 Jul 2020 11:13 a.m. PST

The Chinese say they aren't leaving, so I guess we should reciprocate in kind, OR move it to Hong Kong or Taiwan, just for grins, to really irritate those in power.

Renaming it might be in order too, e.g. several options for consideration include: the "Free Tibet" consulate, or the "Never Forget Tiananmen Square" consulate.

Apparently, the fugitive hiding out in SF has been apprehended/surrendered.

Interesting.
