"While the three major types of transportation in the Civil War – rail, river and littoral – were considered to be of the strategic – or national – level of logistics, there needed to be a regional, tactical-level option to connect them. Enter the wagon; some type of wheeled vehicle pulled by draft animals and driven by men had been used since before the rise of the Roman Empire to provide logistical support to armies.1

Wagons served as the backbone to both Union and Confederate military operations – put simply, it was impossible to conduct any campaign without a few hundred wagons. Thus, an organized system was utilized by both Union and Confederate armies that utilized a mix of civilian drivers and military supervisory personnel to run their wagon trains, therefore allowing them to dedicate the maximum amount of soldiers to combat…"
