Hello: I want to know if there are any books about the Portuguese in Japan during the Renaissance period, focusing on any combat they might have engaged in.

I have been looking for the same information as I am currently painting a Portuguese army to use with "Irregular War, Conflict on the World's Edge". I have found the following book available thru ABE Books: A Portuguese Embassy to Japan (1644-1647) 1928. I have not yet ordered it so I don't know useful it would be.

There is an Osprey on Portuguese Conquistadores. I don't have it at hand but it probably overs a slightly earlier period.

The Osprey book does not address any Portuguese interactions with Japan.

As you probably know, there was a Portuguese army in Ethiopia, circa 1540.

Wasnt the main character in Shogun a Portuguese soldier?

No, he was an Englishmen. But I believe he meets another character later who is a Portuguese trader.

I don't think the Portuguese engaged in any land battles in Japan. They brought weapon technology (the origin of the Teppo was Portuguese arquebus) but were mostly interested in trade (and converting the heathen). Not sure if their ships participated in any naval engagements either. The Portuguese eventually got kicked out altogether over their influence via religion. Interesting what if to involve the Portuguese and the Spanish (from Phillipines) in a Samurai battle.
