After purchasing my pdf copy of the new edition of "The Bloody Barons" by Peter Pig, I am quite pleased with the approach of the authors to the period, the mechanisms of the game, and the clarity and completeness of the presentation. Although I have not yet had a chance to play them, I plan on using them in a game with my club in late August or September. To that end, I'm in the process of re-basing my 28mm WotR figures, using the following scheme: three infantry or two cavalry to a 1.5" wide base, depth 1.5" for infantry, 3" for cavalry. Bases are of six types:
Command: A full-armored lord, a well-armored bodyguard, and a standard-bearer.
Men-At-Arms: 3 foot MaA
Liveried Bills: 3 billmen, at least 2 in livery jackets
Liveried Bows
Unliveried Bills
Unliveried Bows
Using four bases (a command base, a MaA base, and two liveried bows) for a "household" unit, the same but with a liveried bill base replacing the MaA for a "retinue" unit, and two bills and two bows bases (either unliveried or with unmatched liveries – note no banner) for "Levy" units.
I've currently finished eight Retinue units with the above scheme, plus 4 MaA bases. As noted, we should be able to fight a 22-point battle soon.
I hope the authors won't be too put out if I change some of the game's terminology for our club battles, to "ring more true" to my ears. In our club, we'll be replacing "general" with "Commander", and the traits of those Commanders will be "Puissant", "Stalwart", "Uncertain", and "Dauntless" (replacing "Assaulter", "Target", "Unreliable" and "Morale"). And I also beg the author's pardon as our pre-battle set up will involve a "Vantage Chase" rather than a "Piggy Chase"…
