More in our Chain of Command campaign 29, Let's Go! Having beaten off the German counterattack the Americans now return to clear their right flank near Cardonville. They were mauled badly by the Germans at the first attempt, could they do a better job at the second attempt? The full AAR is here: Cardonville (the second attack)

That was pretty tense to start with but with the Germans fixed in their foxholes there was a horrible inevitability about the US build up. The tension was probably to blame for MG team opening fire too early. There might be some protection when dug in but there were too few to do enough in the firefight and the Yanks always had the option of when to initiate it. I think this action showed the value of the delayed deployment even at the risk of last minute double moves by the attackers. Similarly with the minefield off to a flank they had a pretty unfettered approach. The problem is that with so few support points how do you both dislocate and delay their advance to allow the defenders to concentrate everything on part of the attacking force, crush it, and then deal with any response from other units coming up in support. The Americans are so well equipped and numerous that if allowed to prep unhindered they are almost unstoppable. Another compelling AAR that as usual has left me thirsty for more. Thank you. |
