I'm sitting here with a bunch of WWII 2mm based on about 5/8" stands and normally used on geomorphic boards like ASL.

BUT yesterday at a flea market, I picked up some "Axis and Allies" maps in 3" flat to flat hexes. This looks like a natural combination. What are my rule options? It looks as though Rommel would work, though evidently it's a bit ornate for my tastes, and Cordery's "Portable War Game" will work, but not terribly well. (I could put 4 infantry stands on a hex and use them for strength markers.) What else have I got by way of options?

Thanks.

Can't see why PBI2 from Peter Pig wouldn't work. They are intended for a square grid, but I'd have thought hexes would work too. Only problem is you might need to distinguish troop types more than you can with 2mm.

A fun-looking operational-level game I've always wanted to try is "Hurrah Stalino", available at

The rules call for a gridded table but I think hexes would work fine.

There's also this:

There used to be a set called "Hex Command Mechanised." I'm pretty sure I printed it on line. You might want to see if the can find it.

Thank you all. This has been very helpful. Quick review to make sure I've got it right?
PBI2 is pretty much man=man so my 2mm stands equal squads. Same with Conflict of Heroes, Nations at War and Combat Commander.

Panzerblitz/Panzer Leader are stand=platoon. A 3" hex lets me place stands together in the hex rather than stacking cardboard counters.

Rommel is, give or take, stand=company, so multiple stands in the hex are a battalion or equivalent task force and I command a brigade or division. Memoir '44 gets a bit vague about scale, but is more or less here.

HexBlitz, D-Day to Berlin and Hurrah Stalino are stand=battalion so I'm fighting more or less a corps battle.

Have I got any more options at the Rommel/Memoir '44 level? Specifically, anything where I'm not going to pay more for the rules than I paid for troops and terrain and/or not going to have to buy a complete game just for the rules? (Not that I've never done it, but it always strikes me as wasteful to buy a full game for one component.)

Hex Command Mechanized (as found on the wayback machine): PDF link

There was an ancients and sci-fi version as well.

If you go to the Asmodee games website I believe they have the whole suite of Memoir 44 rules free for download.

PanzerKorps is one stand = a company with battalion units. Lightning War – Red Storm is also the one stand = a company with battalion units and is free at groups.io/g/LWRS Click the subscribe link to join. YouTube link has made several YouTube videos covering rules from man-to-man to battalion per stand. There are links to most of the rules in the videos. PanzerKorps also has a forum on groups.io and has a lot of free scenarios there as does LWRS on its group.

If you want a squad level game (one "counter" = 1 squad) that is much, much simpler than ASL then I suggest Valor & Victory. You can download for free a PDF copy at

Robert, the Tank On Tank hex-based board games (East Front/West Front) by Lock 'n Load Publishing are a natural starting point too. You can access the basic game rules as PDFs on their website, or through Board Game Geek.

I've used ToT as the basis for 3mm, 6mm, and 12mm WW2 conversions to 3D, first with hexes, and then with movement areas that mimic a hex grid. (the local group has modded ToT for miniatures into a nice little combined-arms ruleset now, after 6 years of development)

Another Tank On Tank resource, would be what Peter at the "Grid based wargaming….." blog has adapted for WW2 North Africa gaming (blog page and PDF link below) -

His blog, and how he developed his 3mm kit to do his Tank On Tank N. Africa games (and his campaign game system) is well worth the perusal -
