"You know the saying "I need [insert name of thing you don't need here] like I need a hole in the head", well yes it's that, although I could do without any additional holes. This time it's the American Civil War. By way of explanation or possibly excuse I should state that after ancient period wargaming the other big period I used to game was the American Civil War in 20mm using Airfix figures. This stemmed in part from my having been an ACW re-enactor back in the 1970's before I became embroiled in the homegrown variety of civil strife. A few days ago while browsing the web I came across a review of a set of rules called 'Altar of Freedom' and they sounded like they were using some interesting mechanisms. They were available on Wargames Vault for $15 USD with scenario books for the major battles in the Eastern and Western Theatres for an additional $15 USD each, available for a simple couple of clicks of a mouse button. Online purchases, its what we do in lockdown and it was my birthday on Sunday and they come as a PDF so no incriminating parcels. Did I mention that the recommended scale is 6mm too. It's not my fault it was more than mere flesh could bear. So I bought a set of the rules and the Eastern theatre scenarios…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Recently came across these rules myself… exactly what I like most in a historical rule set, Fast Play Grand Tactical scale makes Big battles possible on a normal sized table with simple rules emphasizing generalship. Painting 3mm figures, I have approximately 2 dozen stands to go to have enough to do all 38 historical scenario's… Really wish I had found these sooner |

I have the rules and have played several games with them. Good rules, last summer we did Gettysburg, being able to play Gettysburg on a 6X4 table was nice. It pretty much went as the real battle there was some nail biting by the Union on day 1. The Confederates almost over run Cemetery Hill, but ran out of steam. After day 1 they really don't have much of a chance. Game ended up being more or less a stand off on day 3, Confederate player was not going to try "Picket's Charge" and the Union player was comfortable where he was and was starting to shift troops around to his left flank. Also have played several smaller battles and they all were fun. Noldor42 doing them 3mm would be real nice. I used these paper figures to do my armies in 6mm link |
