Balck is pretty famous surely?

The general public probably only know 1 German general from WW2 – Rommel.

Narratio10 Jul 2020 11:05 p.m. PST

Agreed.
People who read up on the history of WWII would know of him. Those who just see WWII as something Granddad was in, or as a late night movie, would know nothing. So the article starts with the later group in mind.

I think students taught in the US schools believe all Germans in WW2 were Nazis.

Yes, guys like us who study history know of him … as well as other soldiers, etc., who are never in the media, movies, etc.

I think students taught in the US schools believe all Germans in WW2 were Nazis.
Many facts, etc., about history that is taught in US schools, if it taught at all. Is very little, sorely lacking and in many cases skewed.

Just turn on the news today. They are tearing down statues, etc., that most don't know the history of. Or if asked a question about the most basic topic of US history, e.g. who did we fight in the ACW, or WWII, etc.? 90+% of them don't know. Sad very sad …

There's a contemporary's view of Balck in the book Drama Between Budapest and Vienna.

General Winter??

Sorry. He was Russian… or Finnish.

andygamer11 Jul 2020 6:52 p.m. PST

Let's give some props as well to the largely unknown General Hyazinth von Strachwitz as well.

I like Hasso von Manteuffel. In one battle the fighting was so intense that some Russian soldiers found their way into Manteuffel's headquarters where they managed to kill four of his staff and wounded four more. The general personally shot one Russian and dispatched another with a trench knife. Small but gutsy, von Manteuffel also risked his life doing reconnaissance flights in a Storch light airplane.

Yes Manteuffel was also considered a very good commander and as we see, one tough Bleeped text … But unless you are a student of history you would probably not have heard of him either.

He really hurt the Russians at the Seelow Heights. Now that is a cool scenario to play!

When Balck was a Regimental Commander during the invasion of France, his unit was exhausted from prolonged fighting. They had chased the French into a small town. He got his unit commanders together to plan an attack. His commanders pleaded with him that the men were too tired and low on ammo to attack. Balck explained that if they don't kick them out now in the morning they'll have prepared their defenses and the attack would take higher causalities. His commanders still opted for a morning attack. Balck picked up a rifle and walked towards the town to attack it himself. His commanders rallied their men. They kicked the French out of the town and slept there that night.

His command of the 11th Panzer Division along the Chir River is an interesting study in tactics.

For the typical person, if it isnt Rommel, the topic holds.

That was a great bit of leadership in the situation that Balck found himself challenged with in a France '40 battle.

He made all the right choices and lead from the front …
