"The result was the Ardennes offensive of December 1944 to January 1945, usually called the "Battle of the Bulge," in reference to the how the Allied line gave way to the German onslaught. The goal of Hitler's plan, which even his generals thought was quixotic, was to seize the port of Antwerp, at the same time dividing Allied forces in two. But thanks to the heroic resistance of such units as the 101st Airborne, and the return of good weather, which meant Allied planes could once more take to the air, Hitler's offensive ran out of steam. Usually unknown or forgotten by his fan boy/apologists who'd rather talk about how great a general he was than discuss his lying to his commanding officer (several times in the war), sending dozens of American soldiers to their death for a personal reason and escaping any consequences. |

Yes many that study him know this mission was a failure. He did want a bigger force at first but his staff convinced him to go with a much small one. Either way I think it was ill fated regardless. But part of what made commanders like, e.g. Patton and Rommel was their daring, being aggressive and taking some chances. Big risk can make for a big win … or just the opposite. sending dozens of American soldiers to their death for a personal reason and escaping any consequences. Sadly that happened in a number of cases by a number of commanders. The list is long … and on all sides … |
