When I began painting the Union Ayers "Zouave Brigade" (V Corps, 1st Division, 4th Brigade) consisted of the 140th NY,146th NY and 155th Penn and US Army regular battalions. But I have come across references to other Zouave regiments in the brigade, the 5th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment "Duryea's Zouaves" and the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, another Zouave regiment. Did all 5 of these units serve together in the Zouave Brigade at the same time or did they come and go? Thanks |

At the start of the Overland Campaign the brigade was organized like this 140th New York 146th New York 91st Pennsylvania 155th Pennsylvania 2nd United States 11th United States 12th United States 14th United States 17th United States During the course of the next 11 months the brigade was broken up and changed. The Regulars were detached toward the end of the war, because they had to transition back to peacetime duties or going back out West for Indian duty. Part of the brigade was transferred to the 2nd Division and the 5th New York added. You would have to compare the OOB for the Overland Campaign to Appomattox to see the changes. |

The Gettysburg OoB shows the 140 and 146 NY, and the 91st and 155 PA. The 155th PA transferred out of the brigade mid 1864 and spent the remainder of the war moving between multiple brigades and divisions within the 5th Corps. |

But just remember that by mid-war, many "Zouave" units were wearing the standard US infantry uniform as the original Zouave uniforms wore out and were too costly to replace. This got more and more common as time went on. Jim |

The 5th NY was one of the original members of the zouave brigade (with, I think, only 1 other; and the Regulars were in 2 other brigades), but mustered out in '63, before Gettysburg, IIRC. In other words, what was a single brigade in '64 had originally been a division -- the Reserve Division before the creation of the (new) 5th Corps. |

ColCampbell What attracted me to the Zouave Brigade was that several of the regiments were issued with Zouave uniforms in 1863 or even latter in the war as awards for good conduct! The constant shuffling of units doea make this hard to follow. Thanks all. |

The Zouave regiments in this brigade kept their Zouave uniforms from 63-64 until the end of the war. 140th New York 146th New York 91st Pennsylvania 155th Pennsylvania |

Thanks for the correction. The only thing I can plead is that I'm a Western Theater gamer – living in Mississippi and having ancestors who were in regiments in the Western Theater. Jim |

No worries! There were a couple others that kept their uniforms throughout their service. The 114th PA, the 5th NY, the 9th NY, and the 84th NY (14th Brooklyn). Yes, I know the 14th had a chasseur uniform. However, not all of them served to the end at April 65 either. For example, the 9th NY mustered out in 1863 and did not veteranize. Well, two companies did , but they were absorbed into the 17th New York. |
