"A detailed map of ancient Northern Italy. Note the extent of the Celtic colonization in the Po Valley. Actually a large part of the Venetia district was also occupied by Celtic tribes (Cenomani, Anauni, Camuni and others) but till emperor Augustus' reign a large number of them was wiped out by earlier Roman operations of ‘ethnic cleansing' in the area about 150 years ago (copyright: Velhagen & Klafing)."

Although these maps are great and have their uses, the way the borders are drawn reflect a much later era of nation states.

In ancient times the borders would have been much more porous with colonies forming enclaves and tribal boundaries subject to continuous disputes and changes.
