Stunning painting. Always struck me it would be really uncomfortable riding for miles on one of those? |

You read my mind. How did they even hang on? How many of them went on to father children? Consider the spring suspension on a caisson like this…oh hang on, there was none at all! |

I would imagine Witch Hazel was in great demand among Bavarian artillerymen. Wonderful brushwork and model assembly. |

There would have been springs – otherwise the cartridges would be shaken to pieces. And they wouldn't have travelled at speed – just faster than a cart or waggon. And they'd have to be ready to get off and push the guns up hills and across muddy patches. |

Presumably there was some kind of padding (straw or something) in the seat so would it be that different to sitting on a padded bench, albeit one that is bouncing along. I think though that we can deduce that manspreading has a Southern Germanic (Austrian and Bavarian) origin. |

I have an impression that the post roads in France, Bavaria, Rhineland, etc were in very good condition (eg Belgian and French Paves). This "athwarts" caisson style would be less practicable in a country where roads were so bad with mahoosive potholes that could apparently swallow horses (eg UK). |
