Need some expert advice!

Looking to make some bocage and I'm not sure what I should use for a base. I've heard MDF is the best since there would be zero chance to warping. I've never used popcicle sticks but I hear a lot of people use them. How to they hold up to painting and glue? Any warping at all?

I was also considering plastic card, but no one locally sells it and I've tried using garage sale sign material in the past but items tend not to stick well to the surface.

Also, does anyone know where I can get varying lengths of MDF? 2", 3", 6"+ long. maybe 1" wide? (US only)

Thanks for any advice.

To find "Popsicle Sticks" you want:

The term "Craft Sticks" is the key search term.
Sold almost everyplase:
Doller stores
Drug stores
Big box store
Art shops
Joann's
Michails
WalMart…

Classic Craft Sticks are 4.5" x 0.375" 2mm thick

All will warp if soaked in water, but almost always across the grain which runs the length (Called cupping)

But this is easy to avoid buy limiting water used is first coats.
You can also seal things with none water based paint first.

Regarding length. This wood is easy to cut with a coping saw.

If you want to save some time. Just wrap 10 Sticks with Duck tape. and mark your angle on the top one. Uses a Belt sander or even a regular sander on the its side. Then grind down to the line on all 10 and flip and do the otherside.

Remember bocage varies and is thick and tall.

I've seen that picture far too often, but you are correct. I'm planning on building up several pieces, even to the point that high profile tanks can't see over them.

I went to the dollar store and bought five packs of wooden rulers. They are sturdy and I dont have to measure.

Coconut fibers? Those turned out great! How did you do those Wackmole9?

I used 90 degree pine wood angle trim glued onto any base you like since the trim will stop it warping and then put a thin layer of filler over it. If you are putting trees in the bocage it helps to drill the holes for them before you coat the wood.

Craft sticks will warp slightly. But if you base the bocage on the "hill" side and not the "valley" side it works just fine. I have 8 or 10 meters of the stuff on various sticks (I use popsicel sticks – my wife loves fudge bars and just leaves the sticks on my painting table when done).
