… Gunship In 1988

"Thirty-two years ago today, U.S. Army commandos from the 160th Special Operations Air Regiment—the famed Nightstalkers—quietly deployed to Chad in Central Africa and, in the dead of night, snatched up a Soviet-made Libyan Mi-25 helicopter so American analysts could study it.

The daring, long-range mission for many years was a secret to almost anyone who wasn't directly involved. U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command in North Carolina celebrated the mission, code-name Operation Mount Hope III, with official artwork on Thursday…"

Chuck for the win.

Gotta love American ingenuity, unless you are Vladimir Putin, Xi, Un, or other enemies.

Would love to have and see some of those lovely, big, Sukhoi fighters flying at local airshows, and against our fighters at the Topgun, and RedFlag schools.

It was rebuilt up and in the mid 90's was being flown by Raytheon out of Biggs Field and Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas.
We were out on an exercise in 94 when I heard the familiar sound and the hairs on the back of my neck went up. A few moments later this flying tank comes roaring right over us.

It was like a scene out of Red Dawn…I was expecting someone to scream "WOLVERINES!" and "engage" with Miles gear…

Of course, perhaps we already have a few of the modern, Sukhoi fighters too, courtesy of our friends, the Ukrainians.

Hmmm, appears my conjecture is well-founded:

Just ran across this while researching the issue further.

They had a pretty interesting threat array at Ft Bliss. In addition to the Hind which they kept in a hanger on the very east end of Biggs Field, they also had a ZSU 23/4 and an SA-9 which I suspect the ADA school was doing exploitation work on, even though those systems were a bit dated by then.

The inventory grew considerably after we brought back a bunch of stuff from Iraq including a ZPU-4, ZU-23-2, a couple of T72s, a BMP and an MTLB.
