I have been churning out 54mm Armies In Plastic Dervish and Camel Corps at quite a fast clip. So far, I have painted a total of 275 Dervish foot and cavalry, and around 120 British and Egyptians .

Check out my blog for the complete update and lots of pictures ( and I do mean LOTS).

Great stuff. Do you have a secret painting method that allows you to crank them out fast?

An impressive force!

I discovered at the weekend that my grandfather was part of Kitchener's force fighting the dervishes while serving with the 1st Battalion, The Welsh Regiment. He got two medals for taking part in the campaign.

78th PA : for some reason, 54mm figures seem easier to paint. The AIP figures don't have as much detail as a 28mm figure so there is less equipment to paint. Also, I can see the figure better when I'm painting.

Aviator: that is a nice piece of personal history and a great discovery.

How do you prepare the figures for painting?

I just give them a washing in soap and water and then when they dry, I prime them in grey matte Krylon primer. The key is to give them two coats of gloss coat spray when they are finished.

I glue them with tacky glue to wood bases that I purchase from Litko.

In some instances, I will cut off a flimsy sword or spear and replace it with a wire version. In the case of swords, I make the cut so that the hilt remains on the figure's hand. Then I drill a hole throw the hand with a pin vise and fit in the piece of wire.

Ah, the spectacle! I am also being drawn to 54mm plastics. Easy to paint. They evoke a real feeling of "play" with toy soldiers which I like. I have a nice collection of Spanish American War, Romans and Celts, and French and Indian War in 54mm. They only problem is storage.

Beautiful. I actually have the table space to do it, but just not the ambition to paint that many figures!

Awesone, sir! I wish I had the space for that scale!

Great work – very inspiring. I too have found the 54m AiPs easier to paint (other than I can't paint an even straight line for anything). It maybe my paints, but I found they 4X the amount of paint. Because they are twice the size of 28's and for some reason I have to do two coats for most colors. Maybe the grey primer is an answer. I've been using white and/or black.

Breathtaking! I envy your painting productivity.
