Looking for any books (English preferably) that discuss the development of infantry and especially cavalry tactics in the 16th century. The move from pike to pike and shot and the appearance of firearms for cavalry. I've always love the images of early pistol armed reiters and reading about things like "en haie" charges and caracole, etc…

Thanks in advance!

It may be old but perhaps George Gush's Renaissance Armies book might help.

Here are some excerpts from Airfix Magazine.

In addition to Gush – might try

Featherstone Armies and Warfare in the Age of Pike and Shot

Or Delbruck Dawn of Early Warfare

Brent Nosworthy's "Tactical Studies Newsletter" #1 has some information that will get you started. It is free and available here: link

And the above three cited books will be very useful.

Another old book but still with useful information is The Art of War in the 16th Century by Charles Oman.

Thanks gents, I found an interesting article on 16th century reiters by Stephen Trumbull in an old Military Illustrated magazine. Based off that article I ordered his book on the art of renaissance warfare and David Edlitz book on the evolution of warfare in 16th century Europe.

Depending on how far back you want to go you might find 'The Art of War in Italy 1494 – 1529', by F.L. Taylor useful.
