I never add dirt/mud to figures, but I do add it to vehicles around the tracks/wheels. For figures I generally block paint, wash with strong tone, and then go back and highlight. Since the strong tone shades in the creases, etc, it serves to simulate any dust/sweat/dirt that might accumulate on the man, without spoiling the look of the clothes. |

I like my armies looking like they have spent weeks in the field. I can't stand parade ready armies in games. That's just my own preference. |

No proper Sergeant Major would knowingly allow his troops to show up for battle (7years war- Napoleonic) looking like they had spent a month on the trail without some tidying. Perhaps not parade ready but do their best. Obviously skirmishes and surprises are exceptions. Clearly not talking post linear warfare, when the uniform is meant to blend with the background. |
