I've finally managed to finish my second battalion at 1:1 scale
Lots and lots more pics at link Thanks for looking! |

Wow! That's downright impressive! The second photo is amazing. |

For a second there I thought that second picture was of reenactors! Excellent job. |

Is that how billionaires play wargames? On a 1:1 scale. About how many soldiers in a French battalion? |

I agree with athun25 – I thought so too. Well done. |

I like them. No problem with ground/scale/figure ratios there! |

Nice troops. Ridiculous epithet. Adding 'happy' to anything doesn't make it so. d |

Great job. Do you actually game with them? |
Lord Hill | 18 Jun 2020 7:04 a.m. PST |
Hi 79thPA, no, I never have, I just like collecting and painting. Actually, scratch that – I hate painting them, but I like looking at the finished product! |

Brilliant piece of work. I have toyed with the idea of a 1:1 battalion but never got around to it. The close-up from the front with the buildings behind is really atmospheric. My only remark is that if they are not for gaming, I would have placed them closer together for the 'almost touching elbows' effect. |

Great work, very satisfying even to look at just in photographs. Liked especially how NCOs, Drummers, etc. can all be shown in proper numbers and positions. The close-ups were extraordinary, with some incredibly expressive faces. Interesting observation concerning Portes-Aigles and Sapeurs. What information could be gleaned from contemporary musters? Vive L'Empereur! |

In my opinion your faces bring these guys to life. You have mastered the ‘eyes' expertly. Too often troops have a zombie look detracting from superb research and uniform painting. These look like they have just marched of a time machine. Brilliant. Happy Waterloo Day. Chris |

Thank you very much for all the kind comments! They make it worthwhile! R.e. eyes and faces – that's been my approach since I realised (very early on) how poor/untidy a painter I am. I try to put all my energy into getting the faces right and this seems to somehow magically negate all the rubbish painting elsewhere on the figure. With just a few figs it doesn't always work, but en masse it has a cumulative effect. Basically, I'm saying they look good through a trick of the eye! Artilleryman – yes, I think you're right, they should probably be closer together. |

SHaT1984, someone wiz in your cornflakes this morning? LOL |
Der Krieg Geist | 17 Jul 2020 9:34 p.m. PST |
Lord Hill, you malign your work too much, the effect that you have achieved is that they look like real soldiers and not toys in parade formation. All color work in miniature is in fact creating an illusion. You have found a sweet spot and can be proud of your achievements. I would be thrilled to field them in a game and I don't even care for the period. :D |

USAFpilot, I count 328 figures, but it is possible I under counted by 1 or 2. Hardly Millionaire Style. I am a modest working man, I only play 1:1 ratio games in 28mm. I have over 18,000 miniatures at last count and that was well over 20 years ago, before I stopped counting.:D At least I stopped buying more. ;p |
