Not a bad movie and, as an amusing aside, both Dirk Bogarde and Anthony Quayle (both majors during WW2) outranked the ship's captain in real life – Alec Guinness was a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. My question is, does anyone know the ship used as the Defiant? link Best, Nick |

Brilliant, cheers Dave. Fascinating article, and the battle scenes do look like those lovely c19th paintings. Really atmospheric. So, the real ship used was the Marcel B. Surdo, built in Italy, and the models were 1/8th scale, meaning they must have been about 20 feet long!

It was no 'Master and Commander' but an excellent film. I have always enjoyed it and just shows what could be done before CGI. |

Captain Beefheart and his "Magic Band" of Brothers, perhaps? Inquiring minds want to know. B |

My memory ain't what it useta wuz, but I do recall Guinness to Bogarde: "I am about to take steps that will astound you." |

I often wonder what Anthony Quayle thought of "The Guns of Navarone." He spent WWII with the British Special Operations Executive fighting with Yugoslavian partisan. Having read his autobiography of his war years he didn't have a "good war" and to play a British officer fighting with partisans must have brought back some unpleasant memories. |

Excellent article. I wonder what became of the models and how many models of other movies (Captain Blood, etc) are sitting in a studio's warehouse. |
