I ordered some Wargames Illustrated and Battlegroup rulebooks from Northstar Miniatures and Nick was kind enough to send them via courier (most likely due to the weight).

DHL called and stated I owed them $38. USD

I asked for what and they stated tax (GST – I'm in Canada) and 2 other charges they would not explain to me.

I went through 3 different agents and not 1 would tell me details about the 2 other brokerage charges.

I sled about self clearing the books and they said I could and emailed me the necessary scans.

I went to my local Border Services office (located at the airport) and saved $20. USD

It was a bit of a hassle to have to do that but the agent was very helpful and seemed very knowledgeable of the "fees" DHL charges.

It's easy to do and if you're close to a border office then I highly recommend saving some money.

Did the border agent explain what the $20 USD you got back was for? What of the other $18 USD fee? I also live in Canada but too far from the border to make it worthwhile. DHL has gouged me several times in the past on kickstarters…and I mean gouged!!

I find this happens with Fedex all the time too. A lot of these courier companies are allowed to act as their own customs brokers when importing items so they charge a fee for it. I've had several items come via Fedex where they tell me the duty is $2 USD and the brokerage fee is $20 USD on a $40 USD or $50 USD item. For this reason I really try not to use Fedex when importing into Canada.

In Australia the problem seems to be UPS, who charge for bizarre things like 'pest inspection' and 'fumigation' of metal rods & 're-delivery fees' when they don't even try to knock on the door, just put a ticket in your mail box. DHL just drop the parcels into the regular mail system if you have a P.O. Box, no extra fees. Fedex is also pretty reasonable.

If your parcel is listed as under $20 USD in value then you do not have to pay brokerage fees.

UPS is just as bad for fees.

The Border Service's tax calculations were even lower than DHL. I actually paid a total of $8. USD

Not sure of my math skills previously…
