My dad brought back a German backpack from WWII. (The original owner stenciled "Heimdahl" on the inside) The back flap is covered with calfskin. Never seen one painted, or a photo of one like that, for that matter. Anyone else? If I knew how to post pictures here, I would. |

Isn't referred to as a "Tornister"? I think the early ones were still very similar to the WW1 ones which were quite often used in movies for American Revolution British backpacks. I used to see quite a lot of them on Daniel Boone and such. |

Korvessa, Scroll down to images -- TMP link Basically you have to have the picture posted to an on-line site, such as a blog or a picture site. Then just copy the URL of the picture and paste it into your TMP post. Jim |

They were quite common pre-war/early war. I believe they became rarer as replacement equipment later in the war was made from canvas rather than leather. |

Here it is – if this works link I never heard the term before, but after a quick Google search, a "Tornister" does look exactly like mine. (except for fact original straps cut off on mine) |

Tornister – pony-fur backpack. relatively common item. I don't have one in my collection but have seen plenty. |
