…not livestock "Animal rights groups are praising China following the introduction of a draft law to reclassify dogs as pets, rather than livestock. "As far as dogs are concerned, along with the progress of human civilization and the public concern and love for animal protection, dogs have been 'specialized' to become companion animals, and internationally are not considered to be livestock, and they will not be regulated as livestock in China," read a statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, published on Wednesday…." Wordsmithing and doc changes are all well and good, but I suspect it will be far more difficult to change peoples' eating habits and customs. I certainly hope it works though, since no dogs deserve to be on the dinner table, unless they're alive and helping themselves to some leftover meal when their owners aren't looking. |

Things can change surprisingly fast. In the Philippines, my own father-in-law cooked the family dog to please his father on a visit. The children (including my wife) were horrified. That, of course, was decades ago, though in one of the more modern parts of the country. Today, if you talk to Filipinos, they are horrified that Chinese eat dogs. They're not aware that it was popular in their own country just a short while ago. |

I hate the fact that some in the world still think of Canines as livestock. Dogs are mans best friend but not as food source. I find this still going on as barbaric and primitive … With COVID the PRC still has a lot to do with getting back into the Wests' good "graces" so to speak. But what will actually happen with this attempt ? At moving many in China into the 20th let alone the 21st Century. When it comes to their treatment of dogs. |
