I'm painting a unit of Russian Soum Hussars and would appreciate if someone could clarify what colours of lance pennons the front rank lancers carried. thanks Peter |

Prince Prints, the first rank of Hussars were indeed issued with lances in 1812. Don't know how effective they were, though. |

No matter how many years I've been in the hobby I learn something new every day |

Heh the Russian Hussar regts are a complicated beast. First rank with lances, just 17 men per sqn were armed with a carbine. And I'll not go into the attached reserve cossacks integeral to the regt :) |

Nobody knows. BTW, tradionally lancer regiments had lance in the front rank only, although that changed. NSN |

Just wanted to right a topic but found that the source I was going to use had already been translated by Mark Conrad. link Enjoy. |

Thanks for the feedback and comments. I have also been pointed in the direction of The Russian Army by WJ Rawlins which has a table listing the lance pennons for each Hussar regiment. The Soum Hussars are listed as being Red over White. In particular thanks for the link to the uniformruss1812.ifrance.com I was only previously aware of these images through the excellent FG Hourtelle books. For those interested in painting their own units, Foundry produce Hussar lancers and Hussars with shouldered or open swords as well as command figures. Peter |
