"The cost of food more than doubled during the war years. Lots of food was sent away to feed soldiers fighting in the war. There was less food arriving because ships carrying supplies were attacked by German submarines…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Bless you Tango for linking to the BBC's superb Bitesize series for children (an absolute godsend whilst the kids are off school). One of the interesting things in both world wars is that the UK got onto a war footing and adopted the concept of total war including rationing and redeployment of the civilian population to wartime production very early on. I believe the term total war was not adopted until the 1930s however. By contrast the German civilian population suffered rather badly during both wars due to inadequate local production and blockading. |

In Germany it is called "Kohlruebenwinter" or "Steckruebenwinter", that means winter of turnips. They made everything from turnips including turnip steak.
This is a a ration card of the city of erfurt from 1917. |

Never had a problem in the southern USA. Since my grand parents and great grand parents had farms, they were never affected by a shortage in either WW1 or WW2. |
