I know we all bemoan that Zvezda stopped making the big sets in favor of their "Art of War" series. I'm hoping to talk them into restarting the big set program. Here are the email addresses of their world wide rep in Austria, as well as HQ in Russia. Please help out and send them an email:

Seems like the US can get them. I've seen a lot at the cons (OK when we could attend one) and they are not outrageously priced. (Which they would be if there was an availability problem.) Is it possible that they have overcome their slowed production schedule and were getting back on track with them before we all got COVAD-struck? (The GNW arty sets were hard to find before the crisis. See below as they have some (and at a discout, too) as of 5 minutes ago.Doing a cursory glance, they are out of a few numbers but still have stock on others. Agree we should let them know we want to see them back! If they don't want them why not allow Italeri to produce the for a while? ( Or Revell of Germany?)

You are missing the point. They quit making new sets when the founder (dad) died and the sons took over. I want them to make new sets again, like their French Infantry and Russian Lights, and others.

I thought they were already re-releasing a lot of thier sets

It would be nice if they went back into making "big" sets but I can´t see it happening :-(

Sadly, me neither. It probably didn't make money

Widowson29 May 2020 3:39 p.m. PST

They at least answered my email. That's better than I expected. If we keep asking, maybe they'll reconsider. I can see myself buying dozens of their French infantry sets.

Hello Widowson
I have some Zvezda Nap sets, both big box and art of tactic. If you are interested you are welcome to PM me.

Widowson01 Jun 2020 4:31 p.m. PST

Marc,

It wasn't that they weren't making money. The founder died and his (presumably greedy) sons took over. I don't know anyone who buys "art of tactic," but those sets are a total rip off, so I can't believe they are selling a lot of those. But greed, like rust, never sleeps, so they are still pushing those like Trump pushes Hydroxy. Don't know if they've made more new sets of those.

I've got just about all the existing sets I can use. What I needed was good pre-Bardin French infantry. HaT's sets aren't bad, especially the lights, but many are flat looking, and all the line infantry wear trousers. I wanted gaiters. Is that really too much to ask?

Marc the plastics fan02 Jun 2020 3:01 a.m. PST

Sadly, for french infantry, the dream of one, perfect, full dress pre-Bardin, gaiter clad set is just that, a dream I fear.

I had hopes for the HaT set, but it was a bit soft. Then Waterloo1815 looked good, but they fell at the last hurdle (and the mix of Bardin/pre-Bardin was just odd)

Zvezda came so close, and folded just at the critical point. We were promised a Russian command set and French infantry. That would have been invaluable.

Franznap in metal are now the go-to choice, but that does make a unit expensive – for me, with larger units, it is heading over £40.00 GBP a unit, whereas in plastic it would be significantly under £10.00 GBP

And the Art of Tactic boxes – if they were high quality, I would accept them to an extent. But they suffer from too many flat areas and wooden poses.

What scares me is that Strelets are getting there in quality terms, but still seem incapable of producing a set of French fusiliers with just one cross belt and gaiters. I'm fed up with greatcoats and twin cross belts…

Widowson03 Jun 2020 4:09 p.m. PST

I wonder what it would cost to create such a set. Maybe we should set up a gofundme project. If it were up to me, the upper bodies would be separate parts, along with the backpacks and heads. This would make for much better, 3D figures. I guess I'm dreaming. I suppose I should go out and buy a lottery ticket! LOL

Marc the plastics fan05 Jun 2020 11:35 a.m. PST

I can't help but think buying Franznap would be easier…😀😀😀

Widowson05 Jun 2020 3:50 p.m. PST

I don't do metal. LOL

companycmd06 Jun 2020 4:05 a.m. PST

The cost of units is MINIMAL when you consider basing 6-8 figures per battalion.

Widowson11 Jun 2020 3:35 p.m. PST

My battalions are now 36 figures. I used to work at 1/30, which is closer to a 24 figure battalions. I've now opted for the larger units.

Widowson15 Jun 2020 9:19 p.m. PST

I've found I need 36 figs in a battalion to make 2 flags look right. When I was working with 18mm, I used 12-fig French battalions. It was very minimal, but seemed to work ok on multi-divisional table top wargames with a club.

My 1/72 stuff is only nominally intended for wargaming. Out here in Northern Cali, there are damn few wargamers, and not very well organized. I haven't seen a single one in over five years.

Marc the plastics fan16 Jun 2020 12:41 p.m. PST

1:20 gives a good sized unit IMHO

Widowson22 Jun 2020 2:30 p.m. PST

Agreed. Maybe I should send you some fill-in figs for Perponcher. I think those units were 1/30.
