"AT-ATs, one of the most visually iconic markers of the Empire's military reign, have one serious problem: their big dumb stupid fragile legs. You know, the ones that can be stopped with the application of a particularly taut rope. But maybe they're not as big of a problem as they appear?

EC Henry is a YouTuber I'm fond of who specializes in thinking through the technology and vehicles of fiction like Star Wars from a more realist perspective, looking for and, when necessary, building internal consistency and explaining why the rules of this universe might be the way that they are. And he argues that, in the particular military environment of the Star Wars universe, AT-ATs are a good bet—maybe even better than the much more useful-seeming tanks used by the Clones during the Prequel Era…"

Ya gotta admit they look freakin' cool!

It's an interesting analysis, but it doesn't address these points:

A tall vehicle is easy to spot. That makes it an easy target. Do the rebels really have no weapons that can penetrate the AT-AT's armor? Apparently they didn't at Hoth. Why don't they routinely mount at least a few naval weapons, capable of damaging Imperial ships, in ground turrets?

All walkers, tall and short, are vulnerable to hole traps, and are much slower than comparable wheeled, tracked, or anti-gravity vehicles.

The transmission system of a walker is necessarily complex, and presumably subject to breakdown.

On the other hand, there is an intimidation factor to these cool-looking AFVs.

Why worry how vulnerable they are or aren't?

If they look awesome mission accomplished in my book.

If I was a Rebel, I would burst out in uncontrollable laughter, and be an easy target.

On the other hand, if I was an Imperial, I would be wracked by fits of giggling, and be a lousy shot.

Hmmm … a little survival of the fittest produces a Rebel army scarce on troops, all with no sense of humor. Evading Imperials who can't hit anything.

Maybe I've just explained Star Wars battle scenes.

I like CeruLucifus' analysis.
