I am fiddling around with my convention, grand tactical, 1 base = 1 company, rules and I have a question I have unable to find an answer to. On the Eastern Front, in general, how much control would a German or Soviet Division / Soviet Tank Corps commander have over close air support? Would they designate targets or would it be at a higher echelon? How much control could they exercise? Just in general, I know the reality was probably highly nuanced. |

It was pretty common to attach an air liaison team to Division HQ to deal with this stuff. They wouldn't have much (or any) say over general interdiction and air superiority missions though. Those air marshals have to earn their pay. At Div level, treat air missions more like planned artillery barrages in support of prepared attacks (or defences). |

As Martin suggested, but with a higher probability of it not arriving than you'd ascribe to artillery |

Thanks guys! I appreciate it. I think I will do something like this… My rules will be pretty abstract, as they are going to be designed to play double-blind games on a hex grin with ~4 players per side Turn X: 1) roll for how many "sorties" you get next turn (or do this at beginning of game) 2) Pick a target hex Turn X+1: 1) Based on who has air superiority roll for how many strikes get through to the battle area (you are right, not the division commander's job to manage the air battle) 2) If there is a target in the designated hex, then attack it (even if it is friendly) OR if the hex is empty 3) Try to find and attack the nearest occupied hex, if more than one same distance, randomly determine what order. For selected hex roll d6, if > the # of hexes away from target hex, then find the target and attack. 4) If you did not find that target, then RTB. May or may not be available next turn? I will be doing some playtesting hopefully soon and will give it a spin |
