You ever get one of those ideas for a project you've had rattling around in your head for years, but you're not sure how to go about it until you write it all down? This is one of those. Ages ago I found myself being a reluctant fan of SeaQuest DSV. It fell flat in so many ways, but it was interesting in so many others. Especially the action under water. Sadly, it ended up getting worse as the seasons wore on, and it basically became Star Trek Underwater. In 2000 I started playing the PC Game Submarine Titans and that also fueled my desire to represent futuristic sub combat on a tabletop. Fast forward to now…. like most gamers, I need another project like I need a whole in the head, but I think this one may actually have some legs. For ships, I always thought Cold Navy vessels from Ravenstar would be perfect for futuristic subs as they have that sort of look. And ocean floor buildings could be represented by any number of 6mm sci-fi buildings. I have yet to locate an ocean floor style game mat, but am still looking. Open to thoughts and input from anyone who also may have considered, or even gamed with idea before. There was an old topic on it ages ago on TMP and I think Nazrat and NVDoyle added their input but as I say that was ages ago and I can't seem to find the topic.

I agree with all of your inspiration…especially Submarine Titans. I will raise you Blue Submarine No.6. If you haven't seen it please do. I have had this same project in the planning stages for years. I was thinking of spaceships for subs and treating them as 6mm craft. Moongrunt style figs for infantry…etc |

Thanks guys. I don't think I'll do infantry, just stick to subs. I posted this topic over at Lead Adventure and it got a bit more interest and I've also added some more stuff. link |

I've been interested in that for a while, as well as subs vs. USOs/UFOs too. The SHADO Skydiver is a neat sub too. If the robots and deep-sea scoops fail at the job, someone's going to have to go after all those valuable nodules on the bottom of the sea bed. Then, of course, the opposition will have to fight to prevent that, so…….. people in space/environmental suits working on the seabed is not unrealistic. It's more like an alien world down there anyway, given all the pressure from the water above. |

I've been working on this kind of thing for a while now, building on my "Stingray" game. Two variants, one set in the future, the other a Victorian sci fi setting. It's been great fun working up designs and 3D models to print :) |

IIRC, Martin, from Oz was working on this too, a few years back. He's the guy that had Sci-Fi subs that looked rather like Killer Whales. |

Sounds interesting. David, I'd like to see what you come up or came up with, terrain wise. |

Some info on the Victorian game on my blog…. link |

Here are some great picks on a Stingray Game. Shows what you can do with a little imagination and LOTS of time. Great terrain though. link |

That was the article that first got me thinking about my own Stingray game. Hard to think that was over 30 years ago |

That's great stuff! I'm still weighing using a hex mat. All those years of starship gaming have ingrained hexes into my head. |

Actually, something like this would be perfect! It's listed on Worthpoint as a Heroscape Water Mat but I can't actually find it anywhere for sale. Anyone know where I can get something like it?

I've seen the multi-toned, blue and greenish-blue Mediterranean hexmats which would be superb for this too. They have some light-ish coloring mixed in, which makes it look like sunshine reflecting down from above. |

Who makes those Thresher? |

Possibly Monday Knight Productions, but I'm not 100% sure on that, since IIRC, it may have been an olde Geo-Hex product. Was kind of a turquoise and sandy/green hex-mat, IIRC. |
